Violin Lesson Prerequisites

Ages 5-11 - No experience is necessary for students starting violin lessons in elementary school.  This is the ideal time to start lessons!  We will be starting with Suzuki Book 1, Fiddle Time Joggers, and scales.

Ages 12-14 - Some experience is necessary to start violin lessons.  Students should be able to play one of the Bach Minuets in Suzuki Book 1 in tune, with correct rhythm, a good bow hold, good posture, and a nice sound.  Students should also be able to read music for the violin notes in 1st position, and should be able to play a 1-octave A-Major Scale.

Ages 15-18 - Experience is necessary to start violin lessons.  Students should be able to successfully play a piece from Suzuki Book 3 or 4 in tune, with correct rhythm, a good bow hold, good posture, and a nice sound.  Students should be able to read notes in 1st position, and should be able to play several 2-octave scales.

I can make exceptions to prerequisites for students that are highly motivated and dedicated to practicing regularly.

Advanced students are also welcome.  I'm happy to teach 3-octave scales and arpeggios, advanced etudes and pieces.

Lesson Policies

Teacher Absences - In the event of inclement weather or mild illness, we will have lesson on FaceTime or Zoom.  If an emergency or something else unexpected keeps me from having our lesson, I will add a make-up lesson to our lesson calendar.

Student Absences - There are three student make-up/bonus lessons BUILT IN  to our lesson calendar.  So basically, 35-lesson times are built into our lesson season of 32-weeks.  If a student has perfect attendance, they will end up with 35 lessons during our season.  No additional make-up lessons may be scheduled.  This absence/make-up policy applies to all student absences (sickness, car trouble, school events, family events, emergencies, vacations.)  In the case of mild illness or transportation issues, we can always switch to an online platform for the day in order to avoid missing lesson.

Discontinuing Lessons - Generally, lessons are a commitment for the school year and our season of 32 lessons.  If you do have a need to discontinue lessons, please let me know ahead of our last lesson together so that I can finish our lessons on a good note.  there are no refunds for tuition already paid and any untaken make-up lessons are forfeited in the event that you decide to discontinue lessons during the school year.
